Popakademie mourns the loss of Matthias Holtmann
10. November 2025
The Popakademie Baden-Württemberg mourns the loss of former SWR presenter Matthias Holtmann. He worked as a lecturer at the Popakademie for many years: in the early days, he was responsible for interview training for students and supervised them in the studio in Baden-Baden, for example.
In 1979, Holtmann became music editor at Süddeutscher Rundfunk in Stuttgart, later head of music at SDR 3, and after its merger with SWF3 in 1998, head of music at the resulting station SWR3. From 1990 to 2004, he hosted the programs Extraspät, Na und!?, and SWR3 – Ring frei. From 1990 to 2012, he was a regular presenter on the annual SWR hit parade. In January 2005, Matthias Holtmann moved to SWR1 Baden-Württemberg. There he could be heard on weekdays on the program Guten Abend, Baden-Württemberg and on Sundays on Kopfhörer. Derek von Krogh, artistic director and managing director:
“Matthias Holtmann was a hero of my childhood – like all cassette kids, I had immortalized his voice on countless mixtapes. For many years, I listened to almost every show he did. Matthias Holtmann was both a musical beacon and curator for generations and will be sorely missed.”We remember Matthias Holtmann with gratitude. Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family, friends, and colleagues at SWR.
