Popakademie Talks in winter semester 2021/2022

01. October 2021

The Popakademie Baden-Württemberg is offering the online talk series "Popakademie Talks" again in the winter semester 2021/2022. The topic is Discrimination in Music.

The Popakademie Talks start on Tuesday, 05 October 2021 at 7:00 pm as part of the einander.Aktionstage of the Mannheim Alliance for Diversity with the topic "#jewcytalks - Judaism between Hip and Religion".

What role does music play in Judaism inside and outside the prayer room? What forms of discrimination do Jewish musicians experience when they combine and express their Jewish identity and religion with artistic activity? Amnon Seelig (cantor of the Jewish Community Mannheim) and Ben Salomo (rapper and musician) will discuss these aspects. The moderator is Dr. Esther Graf, who holds a doctorate in Judaism and is a member of the board of the Jewish Community Mannheim.

Ben Salomo is one of the best-known and most unusual representatives of German rap. The Israeli-born musician is an avowed Jew and processes his Jewish identity in his lyrics. With his clear commitment to Judaism, he counters anti-Semitic tendencies in German rap and draws attention to the growing anti-Semitism in society.
Amnon Seelig grew up in Israel. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in voice and music theory from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and a master's degree in voice from the Karlsruhe University of Music. He was ordained as a synagogue cantor in 2015 and has been cantor of the Jewish Community of Mannheim since April 2017.

Registration for the online event is available here. Participation is free of charge.
