Popakademie visits schools in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region

03. March 2022

For two days each, several schools in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region will get pop music on the curriculum in spring 2022. Students and lecturers from the world music course at the Pop Academy Baden-Württemberg are also part of the 17th edition of "Pop macht Schule". The main sponsor of the educational project is BASF SE.

Forming bands, managing bands, learning instruments and writing song lyrics - for two whole days in the coaching period in March and April 2022, pop music will once again be on the curriculum of six selected schools in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. While many students hold an instrument in their hands for the first time at the start of school in the morning, they are already on stage at noon and present songs, some with self-written lyrics, in front of their classmates and teachers. Existing school bands and music groups receive tips and tricks from experienced musicians at the Pop Academy to put the finishing touches on their rehearsed songs. This year, the students will also receive workshops on the topic of "Managing a School Band.

The aim of the project, which was initiated together with BASF SE, is to sharpen the young people's creative approach to pop music at an early age. Making music together also promotes the social skills of the participants. At the big final concert on May 13, 2022, at BASF's Feierabendhaus, all participating students will experience what it feels like to breathe stage air in front of a large audience. The musical guest will be an artist from the Pop Academy.

The six participating schools of "Pop macht Schule" 2022:
  • 08./09.03.22 - Weschnitztalschule Mörlenbach
  • 10./11.03.22 - Humboldt-Realschule Eppelheim

  • 24./25.03.22 - Wilhelm-Wundt secondary school Mannheim

The project was awarded the Baden-Württemberg State Teaching Prize in 2009. In 2010, the School of Rock was honored as a Landmark in the "Land of Ideas". The main sponsor BASF SE received the AKS Award from the Working Group for Cultural Sponsorship for its support. Due to its integrative effect, the project was included in the German government's integration plan.
