Music film forum "The Look of Sound" to take place in Mannheim

21. March 2019

From 8 to 10 April 2019 the 15th international music film forum "The Look of Sound" will take place in Mannheim. New television, cinema and internet productions will be presented at the Popakademie during the event. At the same time, the actors of the public television broadcasters, from music creators to editors, will meet to discuss trends and new programme ideas.

In 2019, the focus will be on portraits - whether of musicians, composers, ensembles or musical works. "This year we want to discuss the question of the extent to which the cinematic portrait is a form of approaching the artistic process," says "The Look of Sound" programme curator Katrin Rabus.

The opportunities that the Internet opens up for the diversity of programmes offered by broadcasters and a more sustainable use of content, for example, for a thematic focus in media libraries, is a central topic of the forum.

"Digitalisation brings music and film even closer together, thus offering innovative approaches to audiovisual experiences. As the main venue for the programmatically very diverse forum, the Popakademie is thus once again predestined to be the main venue," says Prof. Udo Dahmen, artistic director and managing director of the Popakademie.

"The content of the Forum at the interface of film and music is ideally suited to Mannheim's cultural and creative-industrial profile. This is why the city of Mannheim is supporting "The Look of Sound" for the fourth time in cooperation with MFG Baden-Württemberg," adds Frank Zumbruch, head of the Creative Commission Mannheim.

The documentary "Joris - Ich Bin Jetzt" will be shown on the opening day at the Popakademie. The documentary is about the success of the Popakademie graduate, his companions and the production of his new album "Schrei es raus". Afterwards Joris and the Mannheim directors Philipp Kohl and Donni Schoenemond will discuss with Prof. Udo Dahmen.

Further highlights are the public, free evening programmes: the ARTE film premiere "The Unanswered Ives" (2018) at the Cineplex on Tuesday evening (registration required) or the SWR film premiere "Wolfgang Rihm - Über die Linien" (2019) by Volker Grandits on Wednesday at 5.30 pm in the Odeon cinema. In addition to the symposium for accredited participants, there will be a public visitors' day on Monday, 8 April, which is open to all interested parties with free admission.
