Concert at the planetarium

14. July 2024

Before the musicians say goodbye for the summer break, there will be one more week of live music from 15.7.2024: Until 18.07.2024, more than 40 bands will take their live exams in the performance rooms of the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg - open to the public and with free admission. On Tuesday, 16.07.2024, two of the acts will play at the Mannheim Planetarium.

"We are delighted that two of our acts will be performing at the planetarium again this year. Visitors can look forward to impressive visualizations set to music by MELLER and MARY," says Derek von Krogh, Artistic Director and Managing Director.

MELLER's music feels like a night-time drive through the gloomy city center; dark, urban and unembellished. With an icy 0 degree wind in your hair and dark basses booming through the car speakers.  Even as a child, her electric piano and writing lyrics and poems were her own survival strategy in hard times. At just 18 years old, the songwriter moved to the capital on her own initiative and threw herself from one session to the next without giving it much thought. The hard-hitting lyrics are what makes MELLER special. They tell of pain and getting up, of panic and aftercare. Their songs suck the listener in and spit them out again, from 0 to 100, without warning.  Their sound moves between old, fragile piano and brute technoid beats, accompanied by cold soundscapes, wrapped in their unique, deep spoken vocals. Contrasts are what define MELLER's music, and they are just as complex as she is.

MARY is a singer-songwriter from Aachen and is currently studying pop music design with a focus on singing/songwriting at the Popakademie. With her clear yet fragile voice, she conveys a world of emotions in German, in which she puts her own experiences into words. Her lyrics are autobiographical and therefore very personal. It is not important for her to come off well, but rather to be unvarnishedly honest - sometimes bluntly, sometimes bluntly. With haunting melodies, she creates a space for depth and vulnerability. In her songs, the artist combines a metaphorical writing style with modern and youth language elements. This makes MARY's lyrics modern and cool, but at the same time profound. Her musical role models are artists such as Schmyt, Celine, Paula Hartmann and Elif.
