Popakademie renames major field of study
05. December 2025
Starting in the 2026/2027 winter semester, the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg will rename the Singing/Songwriting specialization in the Bachelor's program in Pop Music Design and in the Master's program in Popular Music in Vocal Performance/Songwriting.
“With this renaming, the Popakademie is responding to the fact that the term ‘vocal performance’ more comprehensively reflects the diversity of contemporary forms of expression—from melodic singing to rap to the spoken word in general—and thus conveys a more inclusive understanding of artistic vocal practice,” says Derek von Krogh, Artistic Director and Managing Director of the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg."The primary goal of the Vocal Performance/Songwriting program is to tell stories, regardless of the genre the students choose to work in. In doing so, they learn about the diverse styles of popular music in order to broaden their horizons in writing and singing," says Prof. Annette Marquard, program director for Popular Music M.A. and artistic/technical advisor and project supervisor for Vocal Performance/Songwriting in the Master's program in Popular Music. In both the bachelor's and master's programs, students are provided with the songwriting and vocal tools they need for their musical projects, whether in bands, duos, or solo projects. The content covers not only creative techniques for writing and composing, but also a range of vocal methods, including healthy singing, sound production, and improvisation with the voice. In addition, there are topics such as circle singing, writing choir arrangements, working with the loop station, ad hoc songwriting, international songwriter week, working with your own DAW, singing literature, getting to know other singing techniques, interview training, artist profile, stage work, and much more.Alex Mayr is the artistic/technical advisor and project supervisor as well as a lecturer in the bachelor's program in pop music design. The application phase begins with the Popakademie information day on Saturday, February 7, 2026. Starting at 1 p.m. on that day, there will be lectures and information about studying at the Popakademie, as well as study counseling from staff, lecturers, and students. In addition, the information day offers insights into the Popakademie's project and competence areas.
